Detroit Diesel Heat Blanket. NSN 2540-01-262-2073. Designed as thermal insulation for ship-borne Detroit Diesel powered generators. Great for use on Hotrods, Turbos, Downpipes. Made by Tighitco, part number 298S27446. When snapped together, forms a cone with a big end approximately 6″ square, a small end approximately 4″ square, and a length of approximately 8 inches. Would be great on headers collectors also.
I have personally installed this material directly onto a header that runs 1400-1500 degrees. After an initial “break-in,” (slight wisps of smoke and smells) the material takes a set and keeps nearby components cool. Search for images of ” turbo blanket” online and you’ll see what these can do for underhood temps.
Invoice on these was $84.98 each to the US Navy, would’ve been much higher to private industry.
